13 Statistics Scholarship

13MSS
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Michael Walden.

Prerequisites

Open to the top students completing Mathematics 12MA1, 12MC1, 13MC1, 13MS1 or 13MCS who have shown evidence of consistent work ethic, mathematical and statistical insight.

It is recommended that you have studied some form of Statistics before, although it is possible to pick it up at Level 3 with the desire and willingness to fill gaps in prior knowledge. All students must have gained Literacy.

From Level 2 Mathematics/Statistics (12MC1, 12MA1) students need to have achieved Excellence in a majority of the standards covered, although we will also consider NCEA results holistically across other Level 2 subjects studied. The desire to learn and the ability to write coherently and insightfully is essential.

From Level 3 Statistics (13MS1) students should have achieved at least Merit in a majority of the standards studied with evidence of Excellence thinking demonstrated throughout the year.

Students coming from an accelerated Calculus background (with no Statistics) will be considered on a case by case basis.

This course is designed for those students who intend to study at the highest level and will probably proceed to University study in Statistics and Modelling, Commerce, Medicine or Science. Statistics applies to almost any field and is compulsory for some very popular university programmes and so many other everyday life applications. Statistics is the art of extracting meaningful information from seemingly incomprehensible data. In your future life and career, you will need to make good use of such information to be able to make sound, informed and unbiased decisions.

Assessment
Students follow the same course Assessments as the Level 3 Statistics (13MS1) course and the Inference and Statistical reports standards plus extensive additional material at the Scholarship Level.
The Scholarship component is assessed through a final external examination.
